Interior Design: How to Commission an Artist (to create a piece of art especially for you!)

Hey you guys! I’m dropping in here to share how you can commission a piece of art from your favorite artist — so that it is made especially for you!!

If you follow me on Instagram, then you know that every Sunday, I share the work of an artist whom I admire. It’s a fun way for me to make a connection with an artist and it also keeps a catalog of work that I find inspirational!

I recently found Stephanie Henderson, an artist based in Atlanta, GA and posted the above image of her work on my IG. One of my clients saw my post and was absolutely taken with the composition and asked me to contact the artist about a commission! Commissioning an artist is easy — all you have to do is ask! These are the three steps to follow to work with an artist on a commission.

1. Contact the Artist

Contact the artist via email or through social media. I emailed Stephanie and asked what her availability was for a commission — she got right back to me and gave me her timeline.

2. Discuss the details with the Artist

We talked about what size and colors that I wanted to have included, as well as her pricing and preferred method of payment.

3. Ask for a Color Sample

She then sent me a sample of the colors that she had selected, which required our approval. See how amazing the colors look with our fabric selections?

We approved the colors, and within 2 weeks, we received the gorgeous painting.

One final thing — make sure that you have a framer that you trust! Framing is so important, and can really enhance a piece of art! Always look at several frame options before making your final decision.

We hung this gorgeous piece in my clients’ master bath — which is adjacent to the master bedroom where all of those vibrant fabrics that I showed you are located!

Interior Design: Before & After Bathroom Remodel

My clients have two young daughters and needed this bathroom to more efficient with storage and space. They wanted a timeless design in their 100 year old home that would transition with the girls as they grow from playing in the bathtub as toddlers, to maximizing space needed for makeup, hairdryers, etc as they become teenagers.

Interior Design: A Pretty Place for Reading

In this project, in Orinda, Ca., I was tasked with coming up with a design solution for a landing space at the top of a stairwell. It was a space that was too small for a loveseat and chairs, and too big and open to use as a home office.
