Interior Design: Performing a Smudging Ritual in your Home to Clear Negative Energy

You guys, I had a bit of bad luck this past month and so I decided to perform a Smudging Ritual in my home to clear out the negative energy.

Smudging is defined as “spiritual house cleaning”. Native Americans (and now many others) believe that by burning sage, the smoke from the burning herb attaches itself to negative energy and as the smoke clears it takes the negative energy with it, releasing it into another space where it will be regenerated into positive energy.

I consider our home to be our sanctuary — and here’s why I felt it needed to be ‘cleared and cleansed’.

In early April, I had the opportunity to visit our youngest son in Austin, Texas. (Yay! That was positive!) The second day I was there, I woke with a sore throat. After I came home the pain worsened. I won’t go into all of the details and the 3 doctors that I visited as the week progressed and the pain became unbearable and my neck began to swell — but I was finally diagnosed with a bacterial infection of the airway. The specialist (the last of the 3 doctors that I saw) said that I was hours away from having my airway close from the swelling and the infection. Yikes! Enter prescription drugs and massive steroids.

As I started to feel better, I was able to get out of bed and decided to load some dishes into our dishwasher. Reaching for a Cascade Dishwashing Pod (from Procter & Gamble), I picked up two pods that were stuck together. As I attempted to separate the pods, one of them exploded right into my eye! I know…you can’t make this stuff up!

The directions on the Cascade box say that if you get the detergent in your eye, you need to flush with water for 15 minutes. After 30 minutes of flushing — my vision cloudy and blurry and my eye literally feeling like it was burning - we headed to the ER. Enter 4 hours of flushing my eye with saline, a tetanus shot and antibiotics, and a visit to an eye specialist the next day. Note - it took about a week for my vision to clear with no residual damage (Yay! That was positive!).

After all of this I needed to clear out the bad juju that was going on in my house!

I ordered these sage smudging sticks from Amazon…..

Smudging Ritual

I googled a ton of info on how to smudge — and basically, you need to open up all of the windows and doors in your house, light the sage and blow it out and let the smoke cleanse each area of your home. While walking through each room, I said this prayer (found on this site):

Cleanse this space, remove the past

I’ve found my happiness at last.

Fill this space with Joy and Love

Send Your Blessings from Above

The results? I will tell you that after the smudging and repeating the prayer — and smelling the fresh air breeze throughout our house, I felt “lighter” — My shoulders didn’t feel as heavy as they had been.

The next day? For the first time in a long, long time, I woke up with the sun.

Thank you for stopping by! I hope this has inspired you to find ways to bring positive energy into your home!

Interior Design: Before & After Bathroom Remodel

My clients have two young daughters and needed this bathroom to more efficient with storage and space. They wanted a timeless design in their 100 year old home that would transition with the girls as they grow from playing in the bathtub as toddlers, to maximizing space needed for makeup, hairdryers, etc as they become teenagers.

Interior Design: A Pretty Place for Reading

In this project, in Orinda, Ca., I was tasked with coming up with a design solution for a landing space at the top of a stairwell. It was a space that was too small for a loveseat and chairs, and too big and open to use as a home office.
