Welcome to the New Year!  I always love the start of a fresh, new year, and the opportunity to begin new projects!

After the holiday decorations are put away, I usually spend an afternoon, rearranging things in my house to give it a fresh, new look.

I got so inspired that I wanted to share with you some of my budget friendly and affordable style tips on how to update your interiors!

Here are my 5 affordable tips on how you can update your interiors:

1.  Pretty Books

Large and colorful books are a simple way to dress up and change your look on your coffee table.

I tend to gravitate towards brightly colored books like the ones I've shared above and then I layer in decorative items to create a vignette on the table like this:

My favorite places to shop for affordable, colorful books are Amazon.com, Urban Outfitters, and the used book store at my local library.

2. Pillows

By simply changing out your existing accent pillows you can freshen up your space instantly and affordably. Whether it's in a bedroom, living or family room.....new pillows will make a huge visual impact!

My favorite places to shop for pillows are Etsy, Arianna Belle, Lulu and Georgia and Furbish Studio.

3.  Stylish Organization

The New Year always inspires me to attempt to be more organized around the house -- I love pretty catch-alls like baskets, decorative dishes and pretty boxes that can artfully store an array of items.

My favorite places to shop for affordable and stylish organizational items are One Kings Lane, The Container Store, Anthropologie and West Elm.

4.  Rearrange What you Have

Spend an hour rearranging your open bookshelves. Arrange books by color, or turn them around to show the pages versus the spines of the books.  Prop art amidst decorative boxes and sculptural items and synchronize the color of your picture frames.  (Rub n' Buff  is a great product to use if you want to coordinate the color of your frames.)

When rearranging what I have, I scout for items from my kitchen, like decorative plates and layer them in with other items; or I cover existing books with pretty wrapping paper to change their look.  Take a look around your house, and move things that you love to different locations!  It's fun!

5.  Spend some time looking for art or creating your own art to add to your decor.  There are so many wonderful ways to find affordable original art both online or in your local area.  The artworks shown below are all priced under $500 and are from well vetted artists.

My clients have two young daughters and needed this bathroom to more efficient with storage and space. They wanted a timeless design in their 100 year old home that would transition with the girls as they grow from playing in the bathtub as toddlers, to maximizing space needed for makeup, hairdryers, etc as they become teenagers.

In this project, in Orinda, Ca., I was tasked with coming up with a design solution for a landing space at the top of a stairwell. It was a space that was too small for a loveseat and chairs, and too big and open to use as a home office.
