Rug  //  Chair  //  Light Fixture // Art  //  Pillows  // Trays // Cookbook  //  Napkins

Happy Weekend!

I've been so inspired by the art of Bridgette Thornton, featured on Serena & Lily that I curated an inspirational design board around her art and added some of my favorite finds of the week.

1.  Playa Stripe Dhurrie Rug

This rug has a warm coastal feel to it and would look great under a dining table or in a family room.  I love the variegated blues/hues and it can be mixed with oranges, pinks and soft greens in your decor.

2.  Dillon Arm Chair

Are you looking for a comfortable accent chair that is not too pricey?  The lines of this chair from West Elm work well with transitional design.  I think it would be great in an office or as a pair in a sleek master bedroom.

3.  Ennis Chandelier by Currey and Company

A fresh take on a classic chandelier, the Ennis Chandelier is large in scale and would look great on a vaulted ceiling in a dining room or master bedrom.

4.  "Dawn" by Bridgette Thornton

Her work is inspired by nature and her paintings are filled with vibrant color and have a sense of whimsy.  I love this painting because of the juxtaposition of a powerfully colored background together with simple black and white flowers. More of her work is featured on Serena & Lily.  She is so talented!

5. Imperial Dragon Pillows

Orange and blue are complementary colors, so of course this pattern is beautiful and engaging to the eye!  I'm a sucker for anything with a dragon on it -- so of course, I love these pillows from One Kings Lane!

6.  Lacquer Trays

West Elm is killing it with well priced tabletop items, and these simple, elegant, colorful trays are no exception.  Great for outdoor entertaining!

7.  Pure Delicious CookBook

So a little behind the scenes info about our family -- our oldest son (age 23) has life threatening food allergies to nuts, dairy, eggs and fish.  It's been a challenge cooking (and of course dining out) for him -- but I recently came across this fabulous cookbook written by a chef who is also the parent of food allergic children.  Allergies aside - - the book features 'clean', easy and delicious recipes.  This salad has become one of our weekly meals!

8.  Cloth Napkins

With a hint of shimmer, these metallic napkins are so pretty for a summer table!

My goal for the mudroom, was to create an entrance space (from our garage) that made me happy when I walked in the door -- as well as a place to drop our car keys, and artfully store a few items.

Design Dilemma: How to Style a Console Table - 4 Tips

Have you ever wondered how to style a console table or chest in your home?  My favorite part of interior design is when we put the final touches into a space that we have just finished.  It's like the icing on the cake and it completes the design process.

Styling a console table or chest can be simple if you follow these 4 easy design tips!

1.  Start with a console table or chest and clear the surface

I like to start with a clean slate and determine what I want to have on the piece.  I typically want something 'tall', like lamps; art or a mirror on the wall above; and then a few decorative accessories on top of the console.

2.  Add lamps (or something tall) to anchor each side and create symmetry

Lamps create a framework for the space on the wall above the console for art or a mirror. Measure the space between the lamps and then determine the size of art that you need.  I generally look for something that is half as wide and at least half as tall as the console piece.  This creates a balanced scale.

3.  Hang art (or a mirror)

You can easily hang a grouping of art like I did above, or create a gallery wall using varying shapes and sizes of art, or hang one large piece.

4.  Create a vignette of artful objects to add visual interest

Curate a collection of objects that you love in varying scale - I love blending objects that are old and new, with different bits of texture and shine.

Here are some of my favorite resources for consoles, lamps, art and decorative objects:

Consoles:

 Wayfair

The brands I love from Wayfair (for consoles) are Uttermost and Hooker Furniture

Lamps:

Horchow

The brands I love from Horchow (for lamps) are Regina Andrew and Visual Comfort

Art:

Serena & Lily

Each month Serena & Lily curates new, original and often times very affordable art from artists from all over the United States.  I can't stress enough, how, if you can afford it, buy original art versus prints.  Original art is more interesting; has the potential to grow in value; and provides a legacy for your children.

Artful Objects:

Furbish Studio

Furbish Studio offers quirky, affordable, stylish ideas for your home --  and it's one of my all-time favorite places to shop!

Interior Design: Before & After Bathroom Remodel
Interior Design: Before & After Bathroom Remodel

My clients have two young daughters and needed this bathroom to more efficient with storage and space. They wanted a timeless design in their 100 year old home that would transition with the girls as they grow from playing in the bathtub as toddlers, to maximizing space needed for makeup, hairdryers, etc as they become teenagers.

Interior Design: A Pretty Place for Reading

In this project, in Orinda, Ca., I was tasked with coming up with a design solution for a landing space at the top of a stairwell. It was a space that was too small for a loveseat and chairs, and too big and open to use as a home office.
