Interior Design: Top Three Tips for Designing a Beautiful Entryway

Hey there! It’s been a while because I’ve been busy not only with work, but also trying to enjoy the summer! I hope that you are too! :)

I’ve always felt that the entrance to your home should reflect who YOU are. It’s the first thing that people see when entering your space — so why not give a glimpse of your style!

Here are my top three interior design tips for creating a beautiful entryway in your home. Enjoy!

1. Art

Ha! You knew I’d start with that right? Greet your guests with an area filled with art that you love. The photo above is of my entry, where I have a large scale piece of art by Julie Schumer (one of my favorite artists!) . Don’t rush out and buy the first thing that you see. Wait for the right piece to find you. In my case, I’ve had a rotating gallery of pieces in this space, until I found this piece 3 years ago — and now it is here to stay!

A great source for original art is Saatchi Art. The site features a variety of price points and you can search by genre, and art type (i.e., painting, photography, sculptures, drawing). I always encourage my interior design clients to invest in original art. Original art is the perfect way to create a unique space.

2. Eclectic Furniture

Anchor your art with a beautiful console or chest. In my case, I’ve inherited a bunch of beautiful asian tansu chests from my mom. I had a console shelf built into the wall so that I could showcase a sweet tansu chest underneath.

I’ve used some of these consoles and chests in recent projects and they are show stoppers!

3. Lighting

Your entry is a perfect place to put a statement making jewel of a light fixture. Be it a chandelier, flush mount or semi-flush mount — find one that speaks to you! These are a few swoon worthy light fixtures:

Interior Design: Before & After Bathroom Remodel

My clients have two young daughters and needed this bathroom to more efficient with storage and space. They wanted a timeless design in their 100 year old home that would transition with the girls as they grow from playing in the bathtub as toddlers, to maximizing space needed for makeup, hairdryers, etc as they become teenagers.

Interior Design: A Pretty Place for Reading

In this project, in Orinda, Ca., I was tasked with coming up with a design solution for a landing space at the top of a stairwell. It was a space that was too small for a loveseat and chairs, and too big and open to use as a home office.
